I believe starting with a book about Kierkegaard is smarter than starting with actual Kierkegaard. It's easier to follow through if you already know what his general philosophy is about. Just any book about general existentialism, or a beginner Kierkegaard book

Either/Or or Fear and Trembling. Either/Or lays out a ton of his beliefs. Fear and Trembling is a very detailed philosophical analysis of Abraham nearly sacrificing Isaac. If you aren't familiar with that story then pick up a bible and read from Abraham's (originally named Abram) introduction to his death. It's a small part of the bible that will take less than 30 minutes to read. He references other parts of the bible but the story of Abraham is the only story you absolutely need to know to understand Fear and Trembling. He also makes references to Hegel but even if you've never touched Hegel in your life you'll be able to figure out what Soren is talking about.

Nice to see other people getting it. There's that one autist running around whenever you mention Fear and Trembling, who claims it cannot be understood if you don't know Hegel, which in my opinion is complete bullshit.

Pick Either/Or if you're ready to read through all of it without quitting, since the first part (or any single part of it) is not representative of Kierkegaard's position, the book is written as a polemic. Otherwise pick Fear and Trembling, it's short and great.

It is absolutely true for some of his other books though. The Sickness Unto Death is incomprehensible if it isn't read in the context of Hegel.

Don't graduate from K. until you've read some of his journals.
