"One should treat others according to how one would like others to treat one's self."

That's THE Golden Rule.

But if you were to make up a rule, what would it be?

>> No.1172020

Act only according to that maxim whereby you can will at the same time that it should become a universal law.

This is pretty obviously contradictory as a categorical imperative, thx for trying tho

that's a pretty dumb standard for morality, tho. just go with the categorical imperative if you want to go with the categorical imperative.

To be fair, "Treat others as you would like to be treated," is a bit lacking as well. It assumes that others will share your interests.
A butterfly collector who gives an animal rights activist a collection of dead insects is treating another as he would like to be treated, but in doing so is disadvantaging the animal rights activist. We may say that the spirit of the golden rule is not being honored by that example, but that only proves to emphasize the need for more specific redefinition.

Not that guy, btw.

>that only proves to emphasize the need for more specific redefinition.

Perhaps by redefining the golden rule as "one should act only so that you can, at the same time, will that the maxim of your action be a universal law"? or to put it another way, "Act in such a way that you treat humanity, whether in your own person or in the person of any other, never merely as a means to an end, but always at the same time as an end." That might be another way of putting it.

"Treat others as you'd like to be treated" means to treat others with the same respect and dignity that you would like to receive. It does not mean if you want ice cream, buy your lactose intolerant neighbor some. That would not be treating him with the respect you would like to receive. Nor would giving an animal activist a collection of dead insects be treating them with the same respect your butterfly enthusiast would want from others.

Be mindful of yourself and those around you.

Sure is Kant in here.
Let's apply the categorical imperative to that guy's butterfly collector example, shall we?
A person should act ONLY in such a way that he would will to be universal law. Our butterfly collector is now prohibited from giving the gift of dead animals to another, because he would not want the giving of a gift which insults another to be mandated.
Of course, he's also prohibited from collecting butterflies for himself, because he wouldn't want his friend also to have to collect butterflies. Under the categorical imperative, all men must have the same interests, and pursue the same goals, even when those goals are not incompatible. To have a pet cat would mean an agreement to the notion that all men must have pet cats. This is the way that the categorical imperative is different from the golden rule. Instead of being more specific, it is more general, and that leads to situations in which morality can make people worse off for no particular reason, other than consistency. To my mind, that makes it useless as a moral guide.

Sounds good to me. No reason to be vague, though. The new golden rule's "Treat others with the same respect and dignity that you would like to receive."
