The reason for there being so many good female authors in the Heian period though is because literary culture was encouraged amongst women, although they tended to write in what was then a kind of Japanese vernacular, as opposed to the men who would concern themselves more with classical Chinese. That kind of female courtly literary culture simply didn't exist to that extent in the West, and the increase in female authorship really only coincided with an increase in authorship in general.
