Try to read actively. After each page, close the book and try to remember what you just read. Then, read again.
It might make your reading considerably slower, but I guess it'll improve your overall memory on the book.

take basic notes of things that speak to you as you read. reading is like dreams, you just need to jog your memory.

I personally mostly read novella style lengths as I need to read everything in one sitting to really get a grasp on it. if I go to sleep and start a new chapter I only know the plot of what came before and not all the details.
