Read some of it and it was pretty enjoyable. I've heard it described as "philosophical horror" which ended up being pretty spot on. It's a bit wanky but that's pretty much what makes it good. He made a really interesting point partway in I recall, about how conceptualizing the afterlife as an eternal nothingness or as an eternal existence in some other modality are more or less equivalent beliefs that are both used to try and create value for this life in the here and now, even though both outcomes are equally unintelligible

It's basically a collection of pessimist thinkers and their ideas. So, in that regard it's completely satisfactory -it's does exactly what it sets out to do.

One of the stupidest criticisms I've ever read on here. Ligotti's prose is far better than King's and Ligotti's work is all about nihilistic dread/pessimism whereas King tends to write about his personal issues. Like The Shining is very blatantly about his alcoholism and works like IT are fueled by his childhood. Also, when Ligotti cooks up cosmic horror he sticks to Lovecraft's "humanity is insignificant and doomed" view whereas King's cosmic horror creations are usually defeatable. Comparing Ligotti to Lovecraft makes a lot more sense than comparing him to King.
