What are some examples of books that are arguably better than the video game they were based on?

Assasssin's Creed has a long series of novels, a co-worker told me, they've made a good few for halo, judging by the /lit/ threads, and I saw a Rome Total War novel in the supermarket once.
They are mostly genrefiction books, sucking the underbelly of the brand name.
