Finally got around to reading this book series. Turns out that with the exception of the first book and the idea of the world, Napoleonic age with magic, its god awful.
I feel like venting my anger out for the wasted potential of this series and my money.
So lets discuss this series and others that start of strong and with promise, but go to the crapper and are over hyped.

How could messing with history by adding magic end up not awful?

It is not alternate history. It is a fantasy universe based of the Napoleonic age. Muskets, a recent revolution in the new world colonies, and another revolution based of the french revolution. just like the one were they killed all their nobles etc. The difference is in this world there is magic.

agreed OP, it's bad, so I share your pain to some extent, but I didn't expect it to be any good. i just bought it as a potboiler to read on a plane ride
