Eddings has decent worldbuilding.
The world feels vast, populated and alive. The maps are good and descriptions of the towns are also spot on.

The characters of his books on the other hand are shitty caricatures. The plot is laughably simplistic "Good guy kills the bad Dragon guy and saves the Damsel in distress and they marry"

The characters lack depth, the plot lacks depth.

Eddings books may have been entertaining if he could write a decent story. The maps, the world, the different races were all there.

Then again, they beat Harry Potter.

They took pretty much every fantasy cliche and pushed them to the absolute extreme. I think they were MEANT as a parody, but it's honestly hard to tell for sure: the author still didn't go far enough with them.
