reading doesn't inherently imply understanding
I could read the entire western canon but not remember a thing, nor be able to synthesise any of my own ideas based on what I've read
so I don't bother
how do I escape this trap?
I don't want to be a 'well read ignoramus'
I want to have these ideas evolve and fester inside me
I don't want knowledge, I want understanding
I want my own opinions and viewpoints

You’re thinking about internalising knowledge on a conscious level alone.
If you actually sit down and read, even if you feel no immediate conscious changes, your subconscious will be changing and restructuring itself to accommodate new knowledge and ways of thinking.
I had the same problem until I deferred these doubts to the fact that my unconscious will do the work and one day you’ll just magically start thinking about this stuff.
