11664777 No.11664777 [Reply] [Original]

Junky (Junkie) by Burroughs, Hemingway (especially his short stories), and The Pearl by Steinbeck. I like a terse prose. Why does Steinbeck always start off a book with “the Salinas river...”
is Hesse and Joyce have styles? And are they similar? It seems they go on and on ad naseum

I'm interested in some short story/novella recommendations from authors outside the horror genre, open to anything that's a little absurd. Untranslated stuff is fine too.

Try Zeno's Conscience by Italo Svevo.
If it makes a difference to you, Joyce met Svevo, when the latter was a literally who, as one of his student, and he liked his first two self published novels so much he urged him to keep writing (despite the poor sales of his books, that is).
Currently he's regarded as one of the best Italian novelist of his century, and the book I suggested is unlawful his magnus opus.
If you like an unreliable narrator and a deep psychological analysis it will be right up your alley. It's also very readable, despite all of that.

Interesting and surprising recommendations, seeing how I've read all those. Covered all of R.A.W., Burroughs, Ram Das, and a lot of the psychedelic lit from the Leary era. John Lily has done some seriously interesting/curious work. Built an isolation chamber based on his ideas back in the day. Huxley and Thoreau were assigned reading in High School. Skinner's work from my psychology studies. Any further ideas?
Great minds think alike.
