I have read theories that suggest Aquinas secretly became an atheist in the end.

He wrote proofs of God so convincing that many atheists can't dispute them. If he became an atheist at the end, wouldn't that just prove that atheism is a belief no different than theism, and that logic and reason have nothing to do with it? If he became an atheist because he "felt" that God wasn't real?

His 'proofs' are extremely weak though. As all logic and reason of his ilk is. To be honest, they cheapened and perhaps even destroyed mainstream Christian faith. It certainly lead to secularisation, which is just a later form of a path that Christianity was long on. It's been atheistic for a long time.

Nah.
(1) he was giving a commentary on the song of songs on his deathbed,
(2) arguing that Aquinas became a secret atheist would require a lot of proof to be plausible, seeing as it completely goes against his whole life's work.
(3) the "Aquinas became an Atheist!!!" interpretation is something which conveniently only arose in modern times, and it seems tailor made to suit the prevailing ideology that "atheism=most rational!!!" so I am inclined to heavily doubt that interpretation.

>> No.11660242

>>11660206
Nah. Ed Feser gives a good account of the proofs, and why most criticism of them is wrongheaded. They might be wrong, but they are certainly not "extremely weak"

Nobody denies the logic of his proofs, just the assumptions implicit in them. At least, nobody who's serious disputes that they are in fact logical arguments.

This is 100% true regardless of whether Aquinas became an atheist or not. Atheism is every bit as much about "muh feels" as theism. Christopher Hitchens is a perfect example of this.
