what is /lit/'s take on The Painted Bird?

crass cash in and exaggeration of WW2 or legitimate account of the horrors of wartime and that specific war?

Safe to say by this point that it's not legitimate autobiography and is markedly different from the life experience of the author. I heard Kosinski's talent is best displayed in Steps.

Haven't read that one, but reading The Painted Bird was rough. It seemed overly and deliberately masochistic. Other works by those who survived the war have at least contained redeeming aspects, this was just a gore fest until the end where the boy's mind is so warped he can't even participate in society afterwards.

neither of those two

just a piece of fiction that manages to make you cringe nearly every page
