damn, those dumb kidults sure are mad that he insulted a book series for young readers that somehow has an adult following.

my cousin, who is considered a bright student, religiously declares the goblet of fire as her favorite book and has reread the entire series three times, once in the past year, and still stands by saying it's the best she's ever read. One of my mother's friends is a high level manager in a major retail firm and earns well north of $200k a year and considers them the best books ever written, and she doesn't even have the excuse that they were her childhood because she didn't read them until she was over forty years old.

I tried to get my cousin to read some actually good books but she can't stand the thought of reading anything in translation, is monolingual, and can't stand reading books that have any mention of sex because it makes her uncomfortable. She is 23 years old and still uses euphemisms to talk about sex in the company of adults. The guy is right, our generation fucking sucks.

WTF did I just read? This guy seems like a top shelf douchebag with a very high opinion of himself. He doesn't even have anything remotely insightful to say and seems to pen every paragraph with the goal to take some sideways potshot at the book series that is both undeserved and incoherent. And clearly this piece of work is such a wordsmith he gets to invent be words, like "kidult" that he never clearly defines and leaves just abstract enough that he can use it with impunity as a brand new insult leveled at readers.

I was just old enough to grow up along with Harry Potter, and as a consequence of that (plus few to no other fantasy books available at the time) I was essentially forced into reading them all. I enjoyed them a lot back then, and even today like them fine in spite of their many flaws... but yeah, the whole "generation of readers" thing really didn't crop up the way they thought, did it?

I think the problem is that Harry Potter ushered out a whole bunch of clones, each vying for the top position left by it. I'm sure many of the Potter fans went on to find other things to read, but they were split up along with Hunger Games, Twilight, and the legion of others, never again able to unite into a single cohesive whole to devour everything else around it.

Yeah, it likely started with Star Wars and the elimination of the rules that prevented advertising to children in the early 80s. Harry Potter and the films of Quentin Tarantino exacerbated the problems in the 90s.

Every adult I've met who's really fond of those books is hopelessly naive and allergic to nuance in how they engage with both life and art. It's kind of frightening, but I suppose it shouldn't be surprising given that these people were the target of the literary world's most aggressive attempt at branding. It's almost like Harry Potter is the publishing industry's MK ULTRA.

I regularly go after Eric on /v/ when he posts his hourly Xenoblade 2 thread.

There's nothing wrong with having liked harry potter as a kid and you know what, there's nothing wrong with liking it as an adult for what it is. But when you are presenting yourself, and priding yourself, on being a reader and a fan of books and you claim that Harry Potter is the best you've read something has gone horribly wrong. When you choose to read and re-read children's books instead of expanding your horizons something is wrong, much like adults watching my little pony or writing sonic the hedgehog fanfic.

It's like the people claiming that any Xenoblade game or even Octopath Traveler are top 5 JRPGs. It's okay to like books that aren't classics or aren't highly regarded in pretentious literary circles but where the fuck did our standards go?

1st that's not really what the founders intended. There are limits on "Free speech" anyone who doesn't believe this is a naive child. For example you can't say; I'm going to kill the president. This has always been illegal since the founded enshrined the first amendment in the bill of rights.

2nd the only reasons there are no ramifications to you speech here is semi anonymity. You can ask yourself if hiro isn't keeping record of what you say how long that will last. He's already turned /b/ and /k/ into fbi honeypots.

Sure, but the only limit should be against speech in which the speaker states his intent to cause direct physical harm. Anyone who believes there should be more than that is just an authoritarian trying to silence their enemies, and with that in mind, it isn't surprising that these people are gleeful at the prospect of corporate entities monopolizing all discursive space.

Also though you seem to misunderstand the entire ideal of free speech. It is not a call for the government to not interfere in private citiizens' behaviour, that is just something that extends from the basic idea.

The idea itself is that truth will win out if everyone agrees to have open discourse about things. The meme you posted about 'showing you the door' is exactly not the point. You are supposed to engage in discussion, not just ostracize.

is correct and really terrible desu.
People who lie to themselves and really believe what's most convenient for them socially, often do get believed and respected by others even if they make one mistake after the other.
I've known people who're lazy, refuse to do any work, leach off others and still convince themselves they're 'good' because they're socially accepted and their opinions get validated by others.
The others don't see the bad shit they do, because they themselves are guilty of a lot of the same things (wasting their parents' money by partying and sleeping through college for example).
Truth really gets lost in self-delusion and I'm not even immune myself. And the more self-conscious you are about this, your confidence suffers because you rightly doubt everything, which results in being perceived as weak and awarded less social status.

From R*ddit
>I used to read the thick, dusty, contemporary, meaning of life and everything else books when I was in college and had a simple part time job.

>Today I'm reading the slightly risque YA novels while preventing my toddler from enjoying near death experiences. I don't have the time, mental capacity, or desire to read the things I used to when I was younger. It doesn't make me a 'bad reader' or demote my knowledge when I read YA books. I'm still a reader. I still enjoy the craft of written words. And my kid sees that I am reading for fun. Someday she might sit still and read beside me.

>I hope to come back to the deep and intense books when I am older and have the time to appreciate the details. For now, I'm going to find out which witch poisoned the sandwich of her ex lover after study hall.

lit should read Self, imagine Celine, Ballard, Kafka, Pynchon and Burroughs in one. Hard prose focus, wordplay, puns... all that shit is there. There is at least on book by him for most of us here.
