You know,

for being a /lit/erature community, we really tend to fling shit at writers, namely Hemingway, Palahniuk, Salinger, etc. I'm not saying they are good or don't deserve the criticism, but why do we feel the need to break other people's balls anonymously for liking them?

Looking for serious answers.

I can't speak for the others, but as far as Palahniuk goes, it's because he's a one trick pony.

Hemingway is really popular, actually.

/lit/ is full of armchair novelists with no style of their own.

>> No.1163782

it's just the whole "everything that is popular sucks" bullshit that everyone's so fond of nowadays.

what's wrong with writing novels from armchairs

I think with certain authors, it all depends on how you're introduced to them. If adults and other people speak about them with hushed tones, you're likely to find them a genius. If no one really seems to like them except for people you don't like, you might hate their work.

The problem for me is name-dropping and turtlenecks. Kids start championing certain writers the moment they decide to study literature and just repeat what they think is "cool" to read.

Just like religion: it's not the bible's author but his fans that annoy me.
