What is truth? A mobile army of metaphors, metonyms, and anthropomorphisms—in short, a sum of human relations which have been enhanced, transposed, and embellished poetically and rhetorically, and which after long use seem firm, canonical, and obligatory to a people: truths are illusions about which one has forgotten that this is what they are; metaphors which are worn out and without sensuous power; coins which have lost their pictures and now matter only as metal, no longer as coins.

It's not so much that in 1818 humanity was better off than today or not but that the magnitude of lost opportunities is much more immense today and why that's so [global liberal institutions such as the IMF, World Bank, etc]. Ignorance is managed today more effectively on a scale that wasn't possible historically.

Whether or not there is net progress around the world has nothing to do with the glaring inefficiencies where there is no progress.

Mobility is down in America. There seems to be an increase in rate of inflation while wages remain flat. The government is lazy and everything they have their hands in is inefficient, bloated shit.

I probably shouldn't even respond to this. I'll disregard the blatant appeal to authority. As >>11625390 points out, it's not so much that poor people are living "better" lives (in the sense that those living in penury today have microwaves and refrigerators, whereas Rockefeller and Charlemagne did not) as it is that there is an incredible cap between what we are CAPABLE of doing to help the poor and what we actually are doing to help the poor. Mass education and amble production of food was inconceivable in feudal society. These are perfectly reasonable (even easy) goals today, and yet we have not reached them.

Small puddles caked over by an autumnal glaze, the room temperature shouldn't be this low, his soles so imbibed with shit in various stages of decomposition that he doesn't even notice stepping in them, the bits of glaze retain their structure for a few steps before being reincorporated into the fetid sediment he calls a floor and the miserable slabs of sludge that were once his feet, for an instant he remembers, but the warmth of a single tear is futile against the icy Gehenna of his excrement.

The global population is way too large and growing, so that's bad.

Then again, that problem existed as a manifest problem in Europe in 1818, and as a latent problem globally. Now it is a problem that is manifest everywhere and will worsen everywhere before it gets better anywhere, except for a few low birth rate countries that aren't run by pro-immigration zealots (e. g. Japan)

I'd address the problem with this (if it were Pinkerton, who I know dislikes the USSR) by asking him how he would react if the party suggested poverty was steadily being reduced in the USSR, which was true. You could even argue it was vastly reduced in Russia itself to a degree that even most other economies at a comparable starting point would envy. Would he say "wow, I guess we are on the perfect path?" I doubt it, because he has a vision for something more substantial. That is one of the basic criticisms of his constant meme statistic that poverty is being reduced globally, which he uses like a crutch everywhere he speaks publicly. I've probably been made aware of a dozen videos of Pinkerton referencing global poverty reduction as a reason for not doing anything different.
