I wouldn't argue that it's undeserved but American young adults have to be the most depressed, anxious, mentally ill generation we've seen, and that's pretty serious. I'm 21 and have never had a close friend that didn't go through some phases of depression, self-harm, or at least thoughts of suicide, and these are high-performing stem kids that don't let on that this kind of thing is happening until it gets out of control.
You can argue all you want about whether feelings like that are genuine or if we're all just a bunch of pussies, but I honestly think that the combination of all those pressures are going to eventually result in an enormous portion of us just giving up and ending it when we hit the workforce and get those new problems piled on. Glazed, cynical self-hatred is not something that's ever been as widespread as it is among young people now, at least that I'm aware of.
