it's a reminder that even in the 50s things were still so bad that people who hate the world couldn't skirt by, and things are much much worse now.

Holden Caulfield mentions that he was sexually molested on several occasions as a child when that teacher guy was about to molest him while Holden was trying to sleep.

It explains psychologically a lot of Holden's behaviour and his overprotective nature towards his sister Phoebe - he doesn't want her to experience what he went through. People erroneously believe that this means Holden is the creep/pedophile, but this is not the case, he simply wants to protect her.

why would being overprotective lead people to assume he's a creep/pedo? I mean it's not even like it's a random kid, it's his sister. Is any interest in kids considered creepy pedo shit nowadays?

I've never met a guy who was as obsessed with his sister as Holden was with Phoebe. Holden is also a placeholder for Salinger, who really only enjoyed spending time with young people, only wrote about young people, and did his only interview ever with some high school girl.

I honestly think worse of people who liked this book.
It's possible to sympathize with Holden, but identifying with him is a sign that you've fucked up your own life.

holden was obsessed with the purity of children, that is a very prominent theme in the book, i think to do with his brother dying, and naturally that compounds with his affinity for his sister

Holden is OG and had the right idea.

Adulthood is a fuck, phonies can suck my dick.

>> No.11618993

>>11618462
i didn't sympathize with holden even as a teenager, because i never got the 'phony' thing. I mean yes social interaction is 'phony' but it's a necessity to make things run smoothly and there are plenty of honest moments as well.

I did really empathize with him though, i saw him as a kind of broken person who wanted a beautiful world that doesn't exist, and I liked him and the entire book a lot. I really get where he's coming from, i think he just obsesses over it because he's not well. He ends up in a mental institution at the end, so it's clear it's not just teenage angst, the kid is genuinely fucked up. I just felt very bad for him

you don't know any kids at all then. Kids are little demonic-angelic schrodingers, it's like they are all bpd chicks except amazingly dumb and uninformed as well

>> No.11619024

you probably have a dysgenic family. Plenty of kids with bad dispositions exist. the ones i'm close to are all angels, any pouting comes from a pure place.

However i'm sure they have been thoroughly subverted by modernity already, it just hasn't manifested itself yet.
