I can't decide what to major in college... should I do /lit/ or /mu/? I love writing and reading, composing, playing and listening... I don't know what to do.

Deep down you know the truth.

Something useful like economics and then have both music and literature as hobbies

Have you considered studying something useful? Why either pay money (American) or be a drain on society (other countries) for 4 years while you study a hobby?

>> No.11611547

The ability to write/articulate is a skill far more applicable to far more areas of life. Letters, reports, presentations, and social interactions all rely to an extent on your talent with words.

If a music degree doesn't get you noticed among a sea of millions - there's nothing you have that can be applied in another field.

classics. learn greek and latin. read the only things worth reading. warning though there's no going back if you do this. when you realize every question was posed and every answer provided before the fourth century BCE had expired and we've just been going in circles ever since. there's nothing more pleasurable than reading the odyssey in greek but studying herodotus, thucydides, and polybius will make you begin to taste the ashiness of samsara and you'll start to wonder if maybe silenus was right all along

OP, as a music major, I have to say that, assuming you are around age 17, if you haven’t already committed to music it is likely already too late. Of course you can still get the degree but the people at the great schools and getting the big jobs are ones that have known that was their calling for a long time. Just keep that in mind, music can always be a hobby; to be a successful career path, it takes dedication from early on

If you are not a good musician yet, you will never be one. The chances are very small. There is NO musician in the history of (classical) music who wasn't already a very promising talent at the age of 16 or 17.

In the case of literature, it is easier to get good at it because, unlike musical notes, words come naturally to us. I remember reading that Gregory Corso, for instance, only started writing in his 20's, while in jail, and yet he became a renowned poet (some of you might not like his work, but he is a well-known name anyway). And there are other cases too, so clearly it's possible to become a decent/good writer even if you start late, as long as you work really hard and understand that it will take many years and many failures to get where you want.

>Corso was jailed in the very cell just months before vacated by Charles "Lucky" Luciano. While imprisoned, Luciano had donated an extensive library to the prison.[citation needed] The cell was also equipped with a phone and self-controlled lighting as Luciano was, from prison, cooperating with the U.S. government's wartime effort, providing mafia aid in policing the New York waterfront, and later helping in Naples, Italy through his control of the Camorra. In this special cell, Corso read after lights-out thanks to a light specially positioned for Luciano to work late. Corso was encouraged to read and study by his Cosa Nostra mentors, who recognized his genius. There, Corso began writing poetry. He studied the Greek and Roman classics, and consumed encyclopedias and dictionaries. He credited The Story of Civilization, Will and Ariel Durant's ground-breaking compendium of history and philosophy, for his general education and philosophical sophistication.

Just to add one more positive point for Literature: it is easier to get a job as an English teacher than as a music teacher. You can even move to other countries if things don't go well for you in the US (assuming you're American).

if you aren't independently wealthy then you have no business studying literature or music, follow the advice of these drones and go become a cog in the wheel and leave culture to the big bois

You should read and practice. Learn a foreign language and start translating books, this way you will see how to 'build' a short-story or a novel.

Everyone keeps saying "do your own research bro" but surely there's code for an algorithm somewhere that has sufficient predictive powers to just go along with the flow of the "market" and make you a bunch of money, right? There has to be, hasn't there? If not, how do you get into crypto investing
