Just ordered The Silmarillion. What am I in for, /lit/? I've heard it reads like a history text book, which I like the sound of. Big Hobbit/LotR fan, so will it enhance my enjoyment of those books?

You know all those weird cryptic references the Hobbit and LotR throw around, about some distant Gondolin and this asshole Feanor and how Frodo wouldn't need to feel ashamed even next to Beren, and whatever?

You're about to find out what those are all about.

The first two sections which tell of the creation of the world, and the nature of the Ainur can be a little dry, but once you get into the Quenta Silmarillion, you're in for a grand and sweeping tale of tragedy.

Most certainly. The "history text book" feeling is true when he plows through centuries within a couple of pages or lays out family trees, but then you have lots of detailed and beautiful stories about certain characters, which almost read as LotR chapters. Overall a wild, enjoyable ride imo.

OP here. Thanks for the feed back, anons. Got me excited. I ordered the version with the cover that is pictured in my initial post. Does anyone know if it has illustration like other editions?

This book is like if someone took acid while reading the Old Testament. But just be patient, it's not The Hobbit/LOTR, it reads like The Bible.

How did Hobbits originate? Did they evolve from Men via sexual selection for petite females despite short men being effectively sterile in nature? What happened ultimately to the Hobbits in the Fifth Age? Did they interbreed with Men to the point where they were subsumed? Were the male Hobbits cucked by Men? Does the Silmarillion address the Numenorean-Hobbit crossbreeding problem? Did Tolkien discuss this issue anywhere???

Yeah, and what about Gondor's tax policy?

I have it, the only illustrations are a map and a genealogy tree. I really need to get the copy of The Hobbit that matches it to complete the collection
