Empathy is feeling what another is feeling, or what you think they might be feeling. Compassion is simply caring for others, wanting the best for them. Empathy is full of problems. For one, it's personal, full of prejudices. We're much more likely to empathize with people like us. It's also used malevolently - for example, when a bully wants to find a person's weakest spot they empathize to do so. It's also difficult to empathize with high numbers of people. And maybe worst of all, empathy can bring us down. If someone is suffering and we empathize with them we suffer too. But if we care about them without empathizing we can remain strong and levelheaded - we aren't brought down.
