Most music lyrics will always be more poetic than actual poetry.

Pic related. It's "The Devil and God are Raging Inside Me" by Brand New.

I happen to like this album, but you're an idiot.

>> No.1159571

I would say that the lyrics of today are carrying on a very old tradition in poetry and some of them are very good examples of poetry (most of them are good examples of bad poetry, though) Also, it seems that pop music is the only location where poetry is acceptable these days.

Eminem is actually a great poet and lyricist. If you actually look at his lyrics there's some gold there.

Pick an actual band if you want to make a case for artsy fartsy music lyrics.

I'd like to see him produce an actual attempt at serious poetry, not beholden by genre convention or expectation. I bet it would be amazing. I think hip hop is holding him back.

The Velevet Underground had some great lyrics. I always liked Candy Says. . .

Candy says, I've come to hate my body
and all that it requires in this world
Candy says, I'd like to know completely
what other souls discreetly talk about

hell yeah!

In fear every day, every evening,
He calls her aloud from above,
Carefully watched for a reason,
Painstaking devotion and love,
Surrendered to self preservation,
From others who care for themselves.
A blindness that touches perfection,
But hurts just like anything else.

Isolation, isolation, isolation.

Mother I tried please believe me,
I'm doing the best that I can.
I'm ashamed of the things I've been put through,
I'm ashamed of the person I am.

Isolation, isolation, isolation.

But if you could just see the beauty,
These things I could never describe,
These pleasures a wayward distraction,
This is my one lucky prize.

Isolation, isolation, isolation, isolation, isolation.

yeah but its memorable and for the very reason you stated i guess in an ironic way its a very good name

im delighted that the band finally have gotten the accolades they deserve whilst having the experience and friendship to stay true to their original ideals and just grow as artists over time and not chase quick easy sales. one for the big fellas!

Agreed.

To the point i was making.. say it's 10 years from now something.. whatever, the King of England's ceremony for some shit, biggest bands invited to play..

Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome to the stage.. Elbow.

you see?

>> No.1160649

>>1160627

afraid i dont. i just see it now as thats who the band are. this word is associated with great music for me unless talking about one's own elbow of course.

there is actually a story behind why they chose such a mundane and seemingly random word for their name. somethin to do with an old British film or TV series or sommat where a character says the word "elboowww" in a funny elongated way, or sommat like that!

i started out with their first, Asleep in the Back but wouldnt necessarily recommend as a first listen, i actully returned it not quite appreciating its beauty first time round.
then few years later i got Cast of Thousands which blew me away. it mixes the subtlties of the first album with a bit more accesiblity and then go back and enjoy Asleep...before venturing onward to their later and equally awesome others. enjoy!
