I'm trying to break some bad habits by getting into /lit/. I'm going to the library for the first time in ages tomorrow. What is some essential literature? Books you think eveybody should read. It doesn't even matter, just name one.

Utopia by Thomas Moore.
You see that word thrown around sort of willy-nilly, but the book is really not exactly what you expect.

>> No.11586554

The Catcher in the Rye
Watership Down
A Separate Peace
The Sun Also Rises
The Blacker the Berry...
Stoner
The Sailor who Fell from Grace with the Sea

here's some entry-level quality reading. have fun.

Start here, pal. Maybe you read some of it in school but if you're really new to /lit/erature, then this isn't a bad place to start. I'd also like to second this anon >>11586554 and recommend Watership Down and The Sailor Who Fell From Grace With The Sea. Watership Down is a personal favourite of mine and it's a real treat.

When you've finished reading a few books, come back here and let's talk about them sometime. A lot of us have already read the starter kit so you'd probably get a lot of people talking from the get go.

Always remember, reading is meant to be fun! If you find it tiring or exhausting, take a break and return to it when you feel more refreshed. No harm with starting with some shorter books too to get yourself into a good routine. 5-10 pages an hour isn't a bad start if you're new to reading (not that you can't do more if you want) <3.

Why do people still post this starter pack, half of the books no one even talks about here.

Harry Potter

It's a starter pack because they are good first novels for someone who has never read serious literature before, you can't just jump straight to The Tunnel and Pale Fire.

But starting on books no one like can be off putting to. One Flew over the Cuckoo Nest? Fear and Loathing in Lost Vegas? Cmon

It's a good collection of books that many of us have read already so if someone new were to strike up a conversation about them here, most people can get involved.

A lot of people here love Thompson man, what are you talking about? I agree that Cuckoo and maybe Clockwork Orange barely ever get brought up, but the rest are talked about pretty regularly. And even those that /lit/ loves to hate on, like Vonnegut, has some people who like them.

Pick up the entire Western Canon and post a picture when you get back from the library to show us what else you got.

OP here. I forgot to mention that this is a French library, so I'm not sure how many English books they will have. Hopefully I can find most of these suggestions. I'll update in a few hours. Thanks lads.
