idk man i thought the point of IJ is that it seems really ironic at first but its actually very sincere

This is the very reason why he couldn't finish The Pale King. He wanted to write a book about the virtues of plainness and earnesty but couldn't resist pushing his gimmicky ideas into it.

Wrong. The sincerity was performative, making it ironic

wrong, he was sincerely concerned about the main themes brought up in the book, infusing them in places with humor and goofyness or exaggeration doesnt make the core sincere messages void or ironic

this sounds like what a 10th grade girl who just graduated with her english degree from tumblr university would say after learning the word performative....and yes im being sincere, ironically

I was listening to his This is Water speech the other day and there's a bit where he describes how most people's lives are boring and repetitive and going to the supermarket and how the cashier had the "ultimate voice of death". The crowd laughed at this part but you could tell in his voice that he was dead serious, which made me realize the fact that he's always been serious, in other words sincere, yet people find humor in his work somehow.

listen, I dont talk to women often so I wont call you a bitch, but, listen lady, everyone can see that you failed to properly express why I am incorrect for saying what I did to you, everyone knows and sees that you just saying "uhh, umm, huh.. err..ok... alright...um... youre...youre...wrong...ok..." is meaningless and worthless. Attempt to propose an appropriate response or stop embarrassing yourself

Life and the Universe are a series of absurdities.

That something is absurd is often the deepest core of a sincere sentiment.

The Butter Battle Book is a good example from children's literature. People killing and dying over fucking modest differences in opinion.

People shooting up their school because none of the girls want to fuck them.

People creating huge violent criminal empires because they had it rough growing up and wanted not just a better life for their kids but a better life than any other living thing.

I was specifically responding to this and only this:
>yet people find humor in his work somehow.
More specifically, this:
>somehow
I bet you couldn't parse why.

I bet you couldn't tell me in what way I missed the point.

I bet your response will be proof in my favor of both those statements.

This is why I always felt bad chuckling when I read IJ. DFW said in all his interviews that it was meant to be a sad book.

Seriously though the Father diddling his retard mask wearing daughter had me in stitches.
