Solely going by the cover here.
The combination of a mainstream-contrarian goth on the foreground and the arid forest background spring to mind Walden; Thoreau isn't above sulking, pouting and sounding bitter about the current state of affairs, just like those sweet alternative girls I used to know.

this feels like what I imagine the inside of Strindberg's mind looks like during his Inferno period. Given how depressing and fucked this album is, I think it has to be Strindberg's Inferno.

I've read a lot of the obvious choices. Looking for something a bit more "underground," if that makes sense.

I'm glad you like it.
Carpathian Forest is good all around. Their lyrics have a certain literary quality to them as well. Take a look at their Carpathian Forest's lyrics:

Lifeless landscapes
Dead trees up in the hills
Pure autumn bliss

In cold November
On a night of gusting wind
Clouds came down - down

Together we were beasts
We lay in the cold dusk -
Of his negligence
In the mist of the turmoil

Frozen heart
Beast of winter
Mental frost
Beast of winter
Mental frost

Succinct, yet haunting.

The album and song titles are from American poet T. S. Eliot’s Four Quartets set of poems. Fahey later said the songs were "too demanding" to play live.

I don't really either, maybe he considered Spirit of Eden more innovative? I love both, but Laughing Stock is in a whole world of its own.
>>11575783
I've read some Kierkegaard, but not Works of Love. Seems like it would be a good fit though, the kind of heterodox, personal relationship with Christianity that Kierkegaard had is similar to what I imagine Mark Hollis had in mind with Laughing Stock.
>>11576155
Interesting, is this a book about Monet's paintings or a collection of his art? Hollis was definitely influenced by musical impressionism.
