Why is it that people, as they get older, generally stop caring about celebrities?
They can be huge fans as kids/teenagers, but then they become more "cynical" about them...

What is this process called? Is there some good literature about it?
Also, do you think losing this "tendency" completely is desirable?

Older people have lives to live, or at the very least they have some menial calling like child-rearing to focus on. At that age, there is no need for the life of some faggot to fill the void.

You could argue that teenagers have way more going on in their lives than adults, who are stuck in their boring routines. Liking celebs isn't necessarily time consuming. I'm sure you can find busy adults who cream their pants if they see a celeb, in fact that's pretty much how Hollywood works.

It's because they realize in maturity that actors and celebrities are also deeply flawed human beings, and the only distinction between a celebrity and another person is their wealth and status, which actually amounts to very little.

>> No.11570831

>"As kids individualize themselves from their parents, which is a natural part of development and growing up, they try to establish psychological and emotional independence," Ravitz said. "No matter the culture, they need somebody to look to, aside from their parents, for guidance and a model for becoming an adult. In our culture, this is often a sports figure, an actor, or a pop star."
>"We would never make the argument that these relationships can or should replace real relationships," Gabriel told Time. "Because people form bonds in their mind with their favorite celebrities, they are able to assimilate the celebrity's characteristics in themselves and feel better about themselves when they think about that celebrity. And that is something these individuals can't do in real relationships because their fear of rejection keeps them from getting close to people."

i don't think that's really true man. plenty of young people (especially on this board, i'd imagine) don't really give a fuck about celebrity culture unless they're talking about james joyce's fart fetish.

anecdotally i'd say that old cunts tend to idolize a few specific celebrities, where as young people just follow the general movement of celebrity. Still the same amount of mana spent on the TMZ system, it's just that as people get older they define themselves by arbitrating preferences in their engagement with popular culture.

I disagree. Kids are more and more willing to forgo freedom for phones. They're getting their driver's licenses later and later which implies they're less willing to spend time hanging out outside of e-time. Kids read listicles, fill out shitty surveys, play computer games, et cetera to fill in the void. Homework doesn't take that long and parents do all the arranging for SAT prep and whatnot.

Young people need role models more than older people. I read an article years ago stating that celebrity worship is not as pronounced among religious people. It seemed to speculate that secular society deifies celebrities instead of religious figures. Like it's some sort of excess energy.

The business of celebrity is all about cultivating an image. There are admirable celebrities, but Hollywood's a pretty ugly place. I used to love/hate celebrities when I was younger. Now I can't help but find the whole concept to be pretty tragic. Growing out of celebrity worship is not only desirable, but healthy. Hollywood needs some serious oversight especially in regards to kids and animals. There's a good chance some working child star is being sexually abused as we speak. That's pretty fucked up.

The one celebrity I truly admire is Corey Feldman. That man is fighting the good fight alone.

false premise. middle aged men obsess over athletes and middle aged and elderly women love celebrity gossip and the royals and whatever.

if anything older people live way more through television and mainstream celebrities than younger people do. younger people switch meme rapper every week.

Everybody workship somebody in their life time, that's a role model, problem is now-days young people have some mediocre actor or their parents or somebody like mandela as their role model, that's obviously bad for a lot of reason, and parents are the only ones responsible for this, my role model when I was young was Alexander the great.

When i was a teenager i didnt give a fuck about celebrities. I dont even remember as a kid caring or looking up to even on celebrity. There are people who genuenly care about kim Kardashian, kanye west, lil pump all these fucking images people read there lives like a book. Theres people who actually give a shit what kim kardashin did today. Growing out of that, Id call it growing up, thinking for yourself and not sucking hollywoods dick.
