Anyone here has ever been to jail ?
What's the library like ?
Also do they try to feed you the Bible as soon as you show some interest into reading ?

unfortunately I only spent one night in jail and was drunk at the time, technically not even jail but a holding cell. I took that as "hitting bottom" but now I wish id pushed it further, maybe then my diary would actually be worth writing desu

I was in two jails as a part of my professional education (so, not as an inmate, but as a "tourist" of sorts).

Both had very poor libraries, full of old books noone wanted; books in library were charity donations.

In both cases day-to-day managing of the library was the duty of one of the inmates, so I don't think there was a big threat of getting Bible recommendation :) Inmates there weren't very religious kind. Inmates were interested mostly in law books (those were quite up-to-date, surprisingly) and all kinds of light pop-literature (thrillers, crime, adventure, romance, SF).

Maybe in Murrica it looks different.

The night I went to jail was one of the most frustrating nights of my life. I was working on getting it on with this girl, and she had stripped down for a message at my place. She was letting me rub lotion on her when another random girl screamed outside. I didn't think much of it at the time, but my grandma in the adjacent house called the cops and they came over to my place. They saw my girl in the shower(which is where she ran when the cops showed), and decided to search my place. They found a pipe and weed and proceeded to take me to jail. Nothing much happened in jail there besides crappy meals and waiting for the judge. I did ask to read the bible while I was there. Didn't pay attention to their book selection.

(Much later on I got with the girl, but man was I mad at those cops for the massive cock block.)

Punched a cop once when I was really drunk.
There wasn't a library in prison but only an inmate pushing a cart full of law books, self help shit and some second rate novels.
Anyways I didn't feel like reading at the time because I felt like I had touched the bottom and was really depressed.
The place was also shit, my cellmate was a hit and run driver and kept weeping at night, the food was absolute garbage and one could only sleep and train in cell.

So when an unrelated girl screamed outside the cops decided to break into a nearby apartment and do a search? Fair enough, where I'm from the SWAT equivalent once broke into a house and brutally arrested (aka beat the shit out of) the entire family and only then realized that the drug dealers they were after hadn't lived there for about, without exaggeration, 15 years.

I was in for a week-and-a-half once. The library was all donated books. They had some Vonnegut paperbacks and I remember I read God Bless You Mr. Rosewater but I don't think I could tell you a single thing about it. Probably because of my mental state at the time rather than anything particularly negative about the book, although Vonnegut does seem to run hot and cold, IMO.
To my memory, nobody -- inmate or staff -- ever once mentioned any form of religion, including the librarian.
This was US, Tennessee.

I been in prison for a little over a year. The library wasn't great but it had some good books. mostly true crime, religious fiction, other stuff people give away. No one pushes the bible on you but you do sign up for religious activities just to get out of your cell

i was in jail for assaulting some people very briefly, they transferred me to a mental ward pretty soon. the guys there all loved me, i was still really drunk so i was talking about my religious ideas and mostly they were laughing at me but one or two thought i had something to say.

I remember one of them said he was a gang member and he showed me his tattoo, it was a bird of some kind, but drawn in like cartoon fashion, he was covered in tattoos but he said this one was the really important one, and he said the tattoo meant that against a world that hated him he was fighting back. I thought that was pretty gay, like basically ressentiment feelings, but i was in loving mode so i commiserated with him about his situation
