Ham And Rye maybe. It's simple and fun, probably pretty relatable to loser kids, and I think it would be a good stepping stone into garnering an interest for literature.
School books are where authors go to die, and unless it's short and sweet you'd probably just end up turning away potential readers.

Have you ever studied logic? It doesn't teach you critical thinking at all. If anything it's just mathematics and memorizing transformation and substitution rules. My textbook had one miserable chapter on fallacies that was less comprehensive than a Wikipedia article.

>>11565873
We actually had to read this. Horrible teacher though. It's my favorite Bible book but somehow he ruined it - same for my classmates. I also think high schoolers aren't mature enough to actually understand what "everything is dust in the wind" means.

I would probably pick Meditations by Marcus Aurelius. Lots of good advice, and babby's first book on Stoicism. Easy to understand and implement. Plus it's written by someone young children can look up to.

so it would be in addition to what is already read in all high schools?

Then I choose:
Book of the New Sun by Gene Wolfe

And then I don't want the school to force the student to analyze the book in a certain way like they do with others. I just want it to be read, with a possibility that the student will be hooked into searching and understanding the book themselves.
