What language should I learn aside from English? I have mandatory German next year at college but I was thinking of learning Russian as well. Is it too much to learn two languages in the same year at the same time from scratch?

Spanish, best romance language and a doorway for French, Portuguese and Italian. Its pretty easy, has great lit and very useful, third most spoken language and has 50 million speakers in the US

You can't learn two languages in a year. You can't learn one language in a year, particularly if you're a pitiful anglo monoglot. Start with German and give it time and dedication. It won't be easy. Russian is probably even more difficult to foreigners (beside other Slavs).

Every language will have its literary gems. But overall it's probably best/most useful to learn some of the big European languages (German, French, Spanish, Italian, Russian).

Because language is too complex. You'll jumble words, grammar concepts and most importantly of all, you simply won't have the time to put in for properly learning two languages at the same time. You need to put in a LOT of time to become fluent in a language. You're shooting yourself in the foot by attempting two or more. Start learning German right now so you have an upper hand next year in your class. Cram German vocab and grammar concepts. Learn Russian when you become fluent in German.
