I think I'm writing a Harry Stu. How do I spice him up a bit?

>> No.11561686

A book is a structure, composed of elements reliant on each other. You can't spice up a character, spice up the book.

Gary Stus are fine if the world and conflict is interesting enough. They're practically a staple in archetypal stories. Just give them a compelling drive and people will ignore the lack of realism.

Alternatively, scrap that character and start fresh with a more flawed personality. Pick a vice as a starting point and round them off until they feel like a normal human being.

What's a Harry Stu? Is it like a Marry Sue?
If you want to spice up a character change the way he talks. Give him flaws. Maybe he swears a lot, but why does he swear? Because he lacks a strong vocabulary? Or is it because he's a paranoid wreck, or perhaps stressed? Maybe he's always cynical or perhaps naive.
When you're writing a character, the character doesn't have to be believable, he has to be *real*. Just because he's flawed doesn't mean he's unlikable, either.
