Just started reading this, what am I in for?

I'm quite positive that there's gonna be somewhat disturbing shit in it, but is it really that fucked or just 'average level' disusting?

Just for reference, I got it in the original English version

WHY DON'T YOU JUST READ THE FUCKING BOOK? ARE YOU A FUCKING 15 YEAR OLD GIRL IN 1850?

There is nothing disturbing in that book, it is the archetypal love story of a sensible, thoughtful man falling in love with a girl. She's 12 because every girl is forever mentally 12, as cruel and insensitive and inaccessible to any non-egoistic feeling as a 12 year old can be. Even when she's not 12 anymore, in the book, she still acts as she is. There is no evolution of her character because it does not matter if she is a child or not. Nor should it matter to the reader.

man, I just wanted to know if I am right with what I expect.

Beyond "she's a kiddo" there's absolutely nothing in Lolita that might offend modern sensibilities. I don't understand why people seem to think they'll be ostracized if seen reading the book in public, especially when you can read Ada, or Ardor and no one will bat an eye.

well, I did get 'the look' from the saleswoman, that's why I was curious if I just bought ~450 pages of constant rape and beatings

not that I would really care about her opinion, but I guess you get what I mean

It's not disgusting at all, dont go into it expecting some repulsive stuff, it's just sad.

It is disgusting, it's just not explicit. If you're scared to read explicitly pornographic stuff, but not disturbed by violent behavior, as long as it is not related in detail, or sickening thoughts, there is nothing to worry about. However, if you expect a love story centered around a taboo, you will probably be nauseated.
