>decide get into traditionalism
>expected a defense of western civilization
>start reading Guenon
>western civilization is superficial and don't understand metaphysics

Anon, everybody who talks about "traditionalism" but isn't a Christian is just going to wind up discarding everything that's truly traditional in Europe and the Americas, at this point. Evola, Guenon, all of them. "Traditional" Europe is Christian Europe, and there's no way of working around this.

Guenon would agree with that, but he would say that Christianity alone without initiatic organizations like Freemasonry is insufficient, although he considered the Freemasonry of his day to have already degenerated beyond repair.

Tradition died with the closing of the Platonic Academy in 529 AD. Christianity is (now) purely exoteric and thus has only dead ritual.

That's the tldr but if you read more of him he admits that there have been 'traditional' western groups who understand perennial metaphysics e.g. the original neoplatonists but the problem with them and other western groups who 'got it' is that they are not living traditions anymore, there is not a chain of initiation and master/student going back to its founding, hence it receded into the background and is largely inconsequential for the modern west aside from understanding how it influenced philosophy and Christianity.

He also says its still possible for the West to recover this understandjng through the studying of eastern doctrines and ancient western doctrines by an intellectual elite.

Did you seriously expect a defense of Europe from Guenon?! You do realize there are different types of traditionalism...right? If you are looking for some kind of monarchist/christian/ classical nationalist texts you have to read Christian traditionalists i.e. Joseph de Maistre, Chesterson, Augustine, Dante, Thomas Aquinas, etc. Did you seriously not know this or am I being retarded and a missing something here? How do you not know something this basic?
