Is there a book that can just break me as a person?

I just want to know if there's a book (novel, anything) that just explores the idea that his main chracter/man in general will achieve nothing in the end.

For Bread Alone has this feel; the absurdity of making an effort not to starve to death when you live in an unsympathetic society and you aren't shit to begin with.

Read Molloy by Samuel Beckett. If it scratches this particular itch (it will), finish the trilogy with Malone Dies and The Unnameable.

New Grub Street by Gissing is like this, man fails by sticking to his principles.

Diary of an Old Soul by George MacDonald, also.

You guys never left your high school mindset, and what's so funny is that you not only believe you've moved on from it, but that you think you're better for and than it now. You are a confused pitiful little group.
