I don't do it and occasionally (especially with challenging text) will get lost in other thoughts while only minimally comprehending the text. It's hurting my reading speed, and I used to be able to read incredibly fast when I was younger.

If you're reading a work where the author paid attention to how is work sounds when read out loud (say, Shakespeare or Joyce), then you're truly missing out by not subvocalizing.
The only instance when it makes sense not to is when reading one of those 1000-page fantasy novel whose prose is as complex as a shopping list.
