Write a definitive list of all the writers and work that had a strong definitive effect on the English language and it's literature. Don't choose your favourites, try to be objective.

Dude, it was mostly about fucking, not books. Seriously. I found this history show about venison somewhere that had these shitty subtitles because it had been overdubbed in La French. Pretty interesting stuff about the Viking roots of stuff that means bone house, but I don't remember the word.

Did they really have that much of an influence, though, beyond a relatively small following of professional writers?

Wordsworth pretty much kicked off the romantic poetry movement and changed the language and manner with which poetry was written. Coleridge helped by Wordsworth was the main driving force. Up there with Milton in terms of influence.

There is no twentieth century novel without Joyce.

TS eliot is arguably more influential for his essays than his poetry (Pound is probably the more important poet in terms of influence but Eliot is considerably better known)

No Whitman, no modernism.

Beckett is the most important writer of English Language theater since Shakespeare, and, along with Brecht, the most important of the twentieth century. His influence is palpable in most plays written today.
