Maybe Peterson is a neo-Nazi. and before you get all worked up about it, i said maybe - it's just a hypothetical, okay. Maybe he's a closet neo-nazi, maybe not. We're just doing thought experiments here...

wow, what a good thread about literature... or philosophy...?

totally not a gossip thread about memerson

Then you would expect it to be trivially easy for any one of his detractors to dig up evidence for it. The fact that they haven't indicates that he isn't, and/or the people trying to tag him as such are incredibly lazy and stupid.

It would then follow, and again, we're just making assumptions and doing thought experiments, that we can probably say Jordan Peterson's detractors are morons.

not about philosophy

also, doesn't he argue that postmodernism is bad because it compels multiplicity of interpretation?

>> No.11529628

>>11529582
No, and you're a pseud if you don't understand his basic premise.

He argues that postmodernists were correct in pointing out that the world can be interpreted in an infinite number of ways. He often brings up the hard-AI/AI-complete problem (though he doesn't use those terms) in reference to this, since AI researchers very early on realized that object recognition is insanely difficult.

What makes human intelligence special, and by extension what makes literature special, is the fact it's completely comprehensible to us despite how limited of a description it gives about the world. The fact that I can write these words, "She laid back and let her fingers explore," and you all instantly know what I'm talking about is a goddamn miracle when you think about it.

That postmodernists don't appreciate the fact that despite this literal infinite number of ways you can interpret these words, we all converge on a single correct interpretation is mind-boggling.

I'm starting to realize that people really, really don't get Peterson, even though he's giving basic, babby, undergrad-tier information about the world.

Consider something even terser, the famous short short story, "For sale, baby shoes, never worn." If you were to plug that into the Google brain, it wouldn't be able to understand the context of those six words the way the human mind understands it. The fact that literally every human being can infer an entire story from those six words is incredible. You could not write a program to do this.

THAT is what Peterson is trying to say. Despite the fact there is supposedly an infinite number of ways you can interpret those six words, every single person converges on a single interpretation. How on earth is that possible?

The reason, of course, is that we all have a deep common human experience. Post-modernists pretend that this common experience doens't exist and that is why they are fucking pseuds and basically useless for the humanities.

Satan's right, of course.

For Peterson, to give in to the "prestige of the written form" is, as I have just said, to give in to passion. It is passion-and I weigh my word-that Peterson analyzes and criticizes here, as a moralist and a psychologist of a very old tradition. As one knows, passion is tyrannical and enslaving: "Philological criticism is still deficient on one point: it follows the written language slavishly and neglects the living language". "The tyranny of writing," Peterson says elsewhere. That tyranny is at bottom the mastery of the body over the soul, and passion is a passivity and sickness of the soul, the moral perversion is pathological. The reciprocal effect of writing on speech is "wrong," Peterson says, "such mistakes are really pathological". The inversion of the natural relationships would thus have engendered the perverse cult of the letter-image: sin of idolatry, "superstition of the letter'" Peterson says in the Maps of Meaning, where he has difficulty in proving the existence of a "phoneme anterior to all writing." The perversion of artifice engenders monsters. Writing, like all artificial languages one would wish to fix and remove from the living history of the natural language, participates in the monstrosity. It is a deviation from nature.

Intelligent people who criticize Peterson are like people who look down on Elementary school teachers for teaching basic math to children. It's not meant for you and it's good for them you goddamn assholes so shut the fuck up.

Then you have retarded people who don't like him because, like mentally challenged people who reached adulthood without learning how to count their pocket change, they resent his implication that they should, in fact, clean their goddamn filthy room. Those people should clean their penises.

Wendy testaburger has proven time and time again that she will do anything to pleasure her vagina. Wether it is the school football team or the janitors on break, Wendy spends her time as president on her knees or on her back taking the old in out for hours on end... or does she?
