I think it depends. When I was in Japan I saw plenty of people reading stuff, mainly on their phones. Outside of that it depends, I don't really see anyone reading comics or anything either though. I don't really have enough physical copies of manga to read regularly though.

There are two kinds of "literature". The first, which you want manga to be recognized under, is mere words scrawled on a page. The second, is "works of literary merit". /lit/ is a board for #2, not #1. You have a board for manga, go back there.

But comics aren't words with pictures next to them. Comics are primarily images in a sequence telling a story. Words are optional, you can have a wordless comic but not a pictureless comic.
The expressive means and perception of comics are also fundamentally different from literature.

As far as I care it's good to read good manga, which seems to be a rarity. Taniguchi, Nakazawa, Tezuka and Miyazaki look very good to me, but the rest seems quite shitty, judging by what I see posted on 4chan.
