Step 1: Read a lot of books
Step 2: Analyze and rate them
Step 3: Be told that you obviously haven't read enough based on your opinions
Step 4: Repeat steps 1-3 until you die

as a critic?
no point today unless you subscribe to various resentful lenses e.g. feminist, marxist, etc.
but even still, you to be a worthwhile critic you should have extensive knowledge of the canon and prose worth reading for its own sake.

but if you mean where to begin reading criticism, just go through the standard philosophy path beginning with Plato.

literary criticism is something I feel that I would naturally want to spend most of time doing but like you say it does seem pointless in this day and age. books reviews have become redundant too.

so what does one do?

write for pleasure. maybe someone will publish you but if not you'll have a pleasant time writing anyway.
submit to journals and magazines, maybe try and make contacts though I have no idea how one does that.
pic related is what I consider to be the most desirable of modern careers. he gets to write about whatever he wants..movies, music, pop culture.

You need to be in a position where people know your can make them money by the sheer power your mind. If you cannot do this, or at least fool people you can do this, I'd suggest choosing a route that will net you decent income so you can practice your hobby on the side in hopes that you one day get published and are able to make a career out of it.

yeah the thing nowadays is anyone can be a publisher with the internet. so it's really a question of if you want to earn your living writing and getting some acclaim or be content with obscurity while enjoying it

/lit/ guide to criticism:
>1. Read book/wikipedia article
>2. Does it use obscure words, complicated sentences and many metaphors?
>3. If yes, say that the book has good prose (even if it is a collection of poetry) and give it a positive rating.
>4. If not, it's genre fiction shit.
