what are your thoughts on expensive collections?
are they worthwhile

>> No.11508957

They look nice on a shelf. I like Easton Press and Everyman's Library. I usually only buy them if I see them in thrift stores or somewhere for a really good deal.

>expensive collections
It's very dumb to judge a set of books by their price.

Sure, it's a nice thing to have. I have lots of nice books too. They reflect the good taste and wealth of the owner, but judging them negatively or favorably without knowing if they've been read is just dumb. The only dumber thing is presuming to know if they've been read. Put your jealousy and elitism away kiddos.

Everyman's Library has standard prices though? There are paperbacks more expensive than their hardbacks

Everyman's Library isn't expensive.

They are nice though. MMMMMMM acid free paper, yes.

>> No.11511615

What is acid free paper? Is it paper that wont go brown? Som of my moms old books are so brown they are annoying to read

>> No.11511623

Consumerist trash for pseuds who have to show off.

>> No.11511631

>>11511615
Acidic paper goes yellow/brown over time and turns brittle. Eventually it disintegrates.

Alkaline paper or acid free paper remains soft and pliable and doesn't change color. Everyman's library books under proper storage conditions will remain nice for 200 years or more.

Consumerist, sure, but there's nothing more pseud that avoiding buying those nice books because you're worried that you will look like a pseud. Book hipster-ism, if you will.

They don't always declare it, so can you tell by the color if it's acid-free? The acidic paper is pure white while the acid-free is slightly creamy, is that it?

>> No.11511714

yes if you have money.
i don't even have enough for Culture of Critique tho :(
PDFs of books that require page flipping are pain in the neck.

Can anyone convince me to purchase expensive leather bound books when I can download the exact version I want from the internet, for free, and read them on an e-reader at the precise specifications I desire in lettering size, word spacing and even brightness of the page?

It's very hard to tell. Often if the paper has a rough feel to it, it's made with cheap wood pulp and will not be acid free.

Another indicator that the book isn't acid free is if it is printed in the UK. Very few UK printed books are acid free. By far most acid free books are printed in Germany and USA.
