How do we balance higher needs with realistic needs? That is maintain the balances of things such as beauty, community, intellect, spirituality with economic consumption, infrastructure, materialism, hedonism?

Marxists/communists seem to offer either sterile puritanism, decrying everything else as bourgeoisie, or unlimited individual freedom ending up with the same problems of capitalism. While capitalism rejects all higher needs and sees life as existing for nothing more then hedonism that should be exploited through utilitarian needs.

So, what is the solution?

Stop equating consumption to self-actualization and you'll find capitalism is a decent mode of human existence, the best humanity has ever had in fact.
