Everything is tied to happiness, to the pursuit of some idea of a "better life", be it things like God and the pursuit of purpose, those things are just gateways to letting you feel good about momentary indulgences and chasing happiness, with some vague idea of a "higher driver" acting all the while. Meanwhile, asceticism also seems silly. How are we to overcome this feeling of hollowness and singularity of endpoint? Any reading you'd recommend to me?

No, not really, just existentially confused as to how I should go about finding meaning or anything through goals when it all leads to the same place, and if we should use our potentially free wills to seek anything BESIDES that endpoint of happiness, which is itself a simplistic and fleeting idea.

Philosophy seems like it serves the improvement of life but I've forgotten what that means. And I can hardly appreciate art or narrative anymore since all the motivations seem absurd and empty.

Like, is meaning supposed to free us from the need for happiness, or is it simply an illusion (assuming we even found meaning in our lives) that lets us play as rational hedonists without feeling guilty?

Realized this more than 10 years ago, including lack of escape from it and went into Buddhism, which recognizes this insight and tackles problems stemming from it. I'm meditating 2 hours a day for almost a year now to make Enlightenment a living experiance

In contrast to the unconscious experience (the experience of death, for example) any form of awareness is painful. Life is painful, even pleasure is painful in so far as it can be categorized in opposition to unawareness.

So, the pursuit of happiness to its logical ultimate is the pursuit of death.
