Meh. You should read pic related.
Nescio’s most famous story, “The Freeloader,” is literally that quote you posted, but in a compact and efficient short story.

>The sentiment of this quote is great
It's great when you're kind of lost in life and don't know where to go, don't know where to focus your energy and are working a shitty job. But it's a beta/nihilistic sort of mindset in the long run.

>> No.11490639

No, it's not, because it comes from a literal fucking bum. Have you seen "Barlfy"? Bukowski was a revolting hobo, and even romanticized accounts of his life would make any sane person recoil in horror. That quote is empty pontificating for (You)s from a person that was an abject failure in life until his late 50's.

I enjoy my time at work, it adds to my satisfaction because I get to help people and it's challenging enough to not be boring work. I don't think we should derive our sense of worth or status from our jobs, they are a means to an end. Hopefully the end is something good. In my case it allows me to support my family, who I value above all else. So skills and finances definitely add to my satisfaction. But it's not something that creates satisfaction or happiness in me, or provides me a 'center' to revolve around, it's secondary, it's a means. If you're looking for a job that satisfy you existentially in all capacities that's not gonna happen.

In general I totally disagree with the anti-work sentiment of OP's quote, instead I agree with Saint Paul's sentiment: “If anyone doesn't want to work, he shouldn't eat.”
Good luck.

This doesn't apply to anything but construction and service kind of work, or highly competitive jobs you need a degree for. The fact is half of our jobs are complete bullshit.
As Adam Smith correctly pointed out in the wealth of nations. The division of labor brought about by the capitalist mode of production greatly reduces the modes of work someone has to do, and leads to a sharp decline in the variety of skills people have. So people learn how to use a cash register or how to operate a conver belt, how does this make up for the lack of meaning in their lives or the fact that the fruit of their labour is not their own? It's all complete bullshit and this is not the way people are supposed to live.

Of course nothing in life is frictionless, you can't digest 100% of the food you eat, you can't remember 100% of the facts you learned, you can't cross the street without incurring risks, you can't even live safely in a shack in the mountains without wasting time foraging for food or fighting off the elements and animals.
You can't even commit a crime without friction and risk and losses.

Hard work is not meaningful if hard work is your entire life. It quickly becomes monotonous and wearisome. Yet, any brief respite from this, brings joy and fulfillment a million-fold greater than you or I are capable of feeling in this day. Imagine what a sweet berry would taste like after having worked yourself to the bone through the winter. When you haven't eaten something remotely 'sweet' in years. It is incomprehensible (to us) what satisfaction and pleasure one would feel.

I know exactly what you mean, I somewhat agree, but the poster you replied to means to remove activity/work from production. To pursue whatever, including meaningful work, with freedom. Said technology/industry can provide this. Without it, then there is much work to be done, sometimes meaningful but largely not. Largely harsh and unforgiving monotony that lasts for your entire existence. You must appreciate how static and unrewarding (economically and materially) such work is, that is a world with limited technology and economic development. That's a perspective anyway, I'm not sure I agree with it. I think civilisation removes the circumstances that humans can feel and be human in. With all the pain and hardship along. Just know that your ideal may be a bit too cinematic. As the ideal most primitivists (or what have you) hold, is.
