don't do this - "self taught" programmers are always shit and I can always tell in an interview that they're missing significant parts of their knowledge. Unless you are confident that you love programming enough that you will get involved in open source projects or seek out user groups to continue your learning, dropping the major is a bad idea. The only things that programming in your own accomplish are reinforcing bad practices (because no student has ever written decent code) and convincing yourself that you know more than you know.

That's a shame. I've known plenty of competent programming autodidacts. It's a risk, and I agree that forgoing a structured learning environment in favour of it is for most people a bad idea, but it's more than possible to self-teach programming if you go about it the right way, that is to practice regularly, not fall into complacency, challenge yourself consistently, not try to learn too much at once, and get out into the world to make connections. University forces you to do all of this, and if you self-teach, you'll be leaving yourself not to the mercy of your professors, but your own will to learn, which can wane if you don't maintain a good study schedule.

The dead animal case was my favorite, because it was a kid who was likely going to be valedictorian of his class, but everyone knew he was a crazed Neo-Nazi. I live in the mid-south, so this isn't uncommon, but we got to have the cops come in, search him, search his computer, etc. because it constituted as a 'biological attack'. He was actually expelled for the semester with just 2 weeks left to go, and had to take summer classes.

There's also just the bullshit of dealing with teachers, which I understand and sympathetic towards, but you also have to remember a lot of high school teachers - a LOT - know very little about their content area and are essentially blue collar workers with a bachelor's degree. In my state, it is insanely easy to get a teaching license.

>>11485130
PhD? There's not much you could do if you didn't have a background in education. I guess you could develop some technique for reading comprehension or measuring reading levels and tour schools for money, but you'd be competing with big shots who have an actual background in education. Your best bet is to look at associate positions at a local university or teaching at a community college. I know the latter sounds rough, but when I did it a few years back, it was good money and I met some good connections within the school district.

I’m guessing with your reading suggestions you’re generally centre-right? How do you deal with a predominately progressive to leftist leaning staff and board? Is a principal a good position because it gives you more authority around the school rather than just in the classroom, which is minimal to say the least if we are being honest.

Yeah, I got my first job teaching English at 22. Got my Masters at 24, because an Assistant Principal at age 26 and I just got my new job last school year. It's all about getting that Masters degree early so you don't settled in as a teacher - you want to be an educator, not a teacher. To a school board, there's a big, big difference.
>>11491040
I'm not really political. I guess honestly I'm more center-left. My district is far, far more right-wing than I am. We're 100% white, and I know at least one board member is illiterate. I do not live in a large, urban area. Small school districts do not get to weed out the community - they are a facet of the community. 100%.

I didn't take the job for the authority. I took it for the money and the fact that I get paid 94k for working ten months out of the year. And, I do like working with kids and teachers. It's a good gig if you can tolerate the fact that you will see the very worst and very best of humanity. Most jobs don't give you that and it's a wild ride.

Actually, it's funny you mentioned the Hobbit. I designed, and almost implemented, a Tolkien class which I wanted as my AP Lit class. Tolkien is a favorite of mine, and he's one of the few authors I think I could hit every standard with. Ultimately, the students didn't show much interest and I made it a more traditional course.

I really don't know. I daydream all the time about how my life would be if I had studied something related to literature.
I enjoy CS, am good at what I do and earn good money from it, which is part of what made the things I enjoy in my life possible.
I guess that in doubt I would take the same route again and just read/study literature by myself (which is what I try to do) cause the outcomes are based on reality.
At the same time I wish I had studied something related to lit pretty much every day, but that's much more based on wishful thinking than reality. I'd probably have enjoyed the major itself a lot but then be very frustrated after it (probably not earning as much, probably being fed up with students, probably not writing anything good the same way I do now).
So I guess I made the right choice.

Question for CSboys and Accountingers
Is accounting good for me if I'm just a guy who is fine with doing boring work as long as I can get comfy and paid a wage decent enough for one person to live alone doing it?
Is computer science good for me if I'm not an autistical math genious but I do love messing with computers? Or do I need to be REALLY good at math(/sci/ master theory level) to do it? I'd try to land my job as a programmer

>> No.11506070

You do have to be a little good at math for CS. The good part is that the math isn't like the math you learned in grade school, so you might be good at it and like it anyways. The only problem is a lot of programs make you take Calculus I and II. I find Cal 1 useful and a little interesting, but Cal 2 in particular was very boring. Discrete Math, Statistics, and Probability were more interesting.

The B.A. is mostly people who failed out of other programs but already completed the calculus sequence. It's an incredibly diminished version of the B.S. (requiring only 3 major-level mathematics courses) created to inflate 4-year graduation numbers.

To illustrate: My university offers two versions of Linear Algebra. The B.S. students take a proof-based class which begins with a sequence on linear spaces and doesn't introduce matrices until 2/3 of the way through the term. The B.A. students take a course in matrix-arithmetic designed for those majoring in the dumber engineering fields and life sciences.
