Mostly these, and the fact that there are lots of unlikable characters (and simply too many). Why should I care about them? When I realized the author would randomly switch to MINOR characters to follow them I just didn't care anymore.

The highlight was googling a suggested title only to find the author's blog, where they were flipping out about how a woman at a gym had been "fat shaming" him (and IIRC this was equal to the persecution black people face) by talking to him about his workout and fantasizing about murdering her for this, when it was extremely obvious she had been hitting on him.

is he any good, /sffg/?
my friends keep shilling him with the excuse he is one of the best fantasy writers the world has ever known.
while i do appreciate their persistence i dont think i will like it much. i am more interested in the world magic and mysteries revolving around it than in hairy manlet feet, fat bearded midgets and pointy eared pale homosexuals. this is also one of the reasons my friends keep getting into arguments with me as i prefer harry potter over lotr. i always point out to them that harry potter was the piece of art that made rowling into the worlds best known and best selling author. if tolkien is supposedly this good (or even better) then why, including every literary work he has ever done, did he fail to reach even half of what she has with harry potter. and also to mention that rowling is a female so we get a different perspective than we would get in almost every dull book written in the last two millenia
i dont know if i should even bother as i have already seen the movies and must say i wasnt very impressed

How did Niven get away with such shitty writing in Ringworld yet still have it acclaimed as a classic? It reads like a porno - so much contrived fucking, and the human characters feel so weird and stilted that I just can't relate to them. And then there's the weird lapses and jumps in writing (oh, I won't explain the action, I'll leave you confused for two pages and then have the characters explain what happened!)

I disagree, but what makes you say that?

>>11483391
Yeah, it really annoying later on when the fights drag on for several arcs and take even longer because he has to do a bonus chapter for his patreon and said chapter has fucking nothing to do with the immediate conflict, but it gives you important details about the world and the rest of the story won't make sense if you skip it once it reaches the point where it becomes relevant a billion words later. Same thing with the characters when you have one guy briefly mentioned early on and then you're struggling to remember them/their power when they finally become relevant (for that arc). But I'm mostly indifferent to whether a character's likeable or not for stories so that didn't bother me.

The number one thing that Tolkien has going for him, IMO, is inexhaustibility. If you are interested in the mysteries of a constructed world, he's a pretty good bet. If you just say that and in reality you want to read a video-game/tabletop RPG inspired proto-litRPG so you can "discover" what combos the author punches in to make the good guy beat the bad guy you won't look him.

"Vampire, nosferatu, creature of the night - whatever you call him - Jules Duchon has lived (so to speak) in New Orleans far longer than there have been drunk coeds on Bourbon Street. Weighing in at a whopping four hundred and fifty pounds, swelled up on the sweet, rich blood of people who consume the fattiest diet in the world, Jules is thankful he can't see his reflection in a mirror. When he turns into a bat, he can't get his big ol' butt off the ground." "What's worse, after more than a century of being undead, he's watched his neighborhood truly go to hell - and now, a new vampire is looking to drive him out altogether. See, Jules had always been an equal opportunity kind of vampire. And while he would admit that the blood of a black woman is sweeter than the blood of a white man, Jules never drank more than his fair share of either. Enter Malice X. Young, cocky, and black, Malice warns Jules that his days of feasting on sisters and brothers are over. He tells Jules he'd better confine himself to white victims - or else face the consequences. And then, just to prove he isn't kidding, Malice burns Jules's house to the ground." With the help of Maureen, the morbidly obese, stripper-vampire who made him, and Doodlebug, an undead cross-dresser who (literally) flies in from the coast - Jules must find a way to contend with the hurdles that life throws at him ... without getting a stake through the heart. It's enough to give a man the blues.

I don't have anything against gnosticism. (Does the demiurge make an appearance?) But I know BotNS an unreliable narrator story. Figuring It Out might be fun for some people but a multivolume puzzle (which is what I hear Malazan is too) isn't a draw for me. Will I even care about the characters? Aside from the plot twists when you find out What Really Happened, is the narrative interesting by itself? I've heard maybe not on both counts.

>>11483885
I read Stranger in a Strange Land a long ass time ago. I enjoyed the hippydippy feels back then when I was an optimist about humanity and the world. I'm not sure what I'd think about it now that I've achieved supervillain-mind and think it would be great if humanity was destroyed.

>>11484072
I think that knight is supposed to be some mentally tortured woman(female) who feels the tentacles of that thing behind her psychically caressing her brain throughout the novel. Pretty sure someone mentioned that in the thread i saved the pic from. Not sure whether that increases or decreases the chances of a Columbine.

I can only give you my current take on BotNS as I'm only halfway through. I cared more during the Shadow of the Torturer than I do now. Severian and Thecla are the most interesting to me, and aspects of the world are very up my alley such as alzabos.
Both volumes take dips in terms of vagueness (or perhaps barrier of entry) being thick and causing you to question things like pacing, but the second more-so. I've also read that the four volumes are essentially one novel, hence the abrupt conclusions that can make you wonder if you somehow are wasting your time.
I am sticking around for the things mentioned, including what I've read here, but also because Gene is legitimately really good at writing. I'm not a prose connoisseur but I have to admit that BotNS has me looking at prose differently, with more scrutiny and a yearning for it to be more captivating.
So far the Book of the Neew Sun feels like the equivalent of reading Dark Souls, with a similar barrier of entry but core of...something---that might take a bit of gitting gud to truly appreciate, or at the very least, understand.

'History of Middle Earth' is almost completely pure lore
The soon to be three extended Silmarillion stories are Tolkien & Son's best tales. (Superior than the short chapters they're derived from in the Silmarillion/Lost Tales.)
You could read Book of Lost Tales, if you enjoy campfire storytelling with intentionally archaic structure and words. Although those stories aren't "canon", and it's much longer than the Silmarillion (they contain the same key stories, but told in a different way).
You can imagine that the Silmarillion shows what actually happens directly, and the Lost Tales is the Silmarillion passed down through several generations of oral tradition, like Homer's stories.

Anyone read The War With No Name series (Mort(e), D'Arc) by Robert Repino? A relative got me the books because I love dogs and cats and she saw them in the Science Fiction/Fantasy section and decided to get them for me on a whim. I read the back covers and liked the insanity of the premise but since it seems relatively new and I had never heard of it before, I figured asking about it here might give me some insight.

She also got me the Iluminatus! trilogy but I'm not going to read that one just yet, but opinions on that would also be appreciated.

A colonization story, wasn't bad at all. Strongly influenced by James Blish's The Seedling Stars. No gay stuff, although the protagonist (who's the golden manbaby on the cover) spends quite a bit of time thinking about his missing penis. Seriously.

Like most dinosaur standalones, the end of the story is crammed a bit awkwardly onto the regulation ~200 pages. Still, worth a read if you see it, plus it's got the meme cover.

I wanted to share my overwhelming appreciation of Brandon Sanderson. I'm currently reading 'The Way of Kings' and am struck by how complex the characterisation is, how thorough the worldbuilding is, and how creative and natural his writing style is. I'd visited his site earlier where he has the bar charts showing his progress with his books and assumed he was a taste of the future- machines generating stories for us based on calculation and formulae. Could I have been more wrong?

I tried out the first book of the Mistborn series and was absorbed by Kelsier. Some of the fight scenes in that book were so imaginative and vividly described. And now I've finally got my bands on 'The Way of Kings' (previously I was mistakenly delivered two copies of part 2 so I delayed seeking out the first part as life is busy). Again, the characters as so fascinating, relatable, and complex. His writing is still original and demonstrating effortless creativity. And there's a certain comfort to knowing that you're enjoying the writing of a prolific writer who is good at what they do- there's more to seek and enjoy.

How does he do it? It's like he's cut out the whole 'oh, give me time as I live and seek inspiration for the next page' and has managed to observe and absorb so much about life, personality, writing and so much more and has managed to wrestle it into some kind of order so that he can draw on things at will as he churns out these fresh, satiating books that are so well balanced and... whole (in a wholesomely whole kind of way). It's awe inspiring. Putting pen to paper seems hard enough, but doing is so masterfully... I wouldnt't be surprised if someone told me that he's actually several centuries old, having devoted the last few to the study of story and writing.

What a gem. I'm writing this because Fantasy used to play a large role in helping me cope with loneliness and depression when I was younger and, over time, the repetitiveness of it and the new grimdark stuff just couldn't do it. I've finally found something that, once again, is giving me a bit of passion and comfort. Thank you so much, Mr Sanderson.

I think the Wolfe shilling here actually does him a disservice. Everyone loves to rhapsodize over the twists and big reveals as if its some M. Night Shyamalan bullshit and I think that attracts people looking for the wrong thing and leads to their subsequent disappointment. It's all about the little details and how he weaves things together, the themes, the concepts, etc. Just enjoy the book instead of waiting to be blown away. Yeah, you'll probably find out that some things weren't what you expected, or were connected in a way that at first wasn't obvious, but its not about hitting some big reveal. If you're a book or two in and not liking it, don't expect to instantly love it when you finish the series. He's not about cheap thrills.

Road by Cormac McCarthy, while nothing special as far as sci-fi concepts go (being a pretty standard post-apocalyptic survival story), is pretty notable in how bleak it is.
