What are good introductory books? Is it okay to read about the mythologies of the world to try to get an overall idea of the underlying themes and ideas?

Anthropology is such a broad field that you wouldn't really learn anything from a general introduction. Sounds like you're more interested in cultural anthropology. Unfortunately that subfield has been infested by Marxists and feminists for decades, so you'd have to read something from like the 1930s to learn anything.

From what I know of it, yes - I'm interested in cultural anthropology. I don't mind if the book is from the 1930s as long as it's still in print/downloadable. Any recommendations?
