Just finished Monkey or Journey to the west.
So if you like chink web novels or anything of that sorts that has some eastern mythology in it. This seems like a must read, since you will get allot more of the references there. I can see it has a great influence on all Chinese stuff( i have read littel but still)
I you are not you can tell its old and its mostly stores you can tell with you bros around the campfire. It gets a little tedious to get true in one go.
Overall worth a read.

Witchmark 272p.
It was just meh overall.
I was looking to read some books about wizards and only after committing to reading it I found out how homosexual this book is, though the romance was rather tastefully done. So looking from the GRI angle the book is totally gay, with only a dash of implied rape and some weird sub-dom magical slavery kept in the family. The magic and the setting in this book was alright. But the main plot mystery, the Really Bad Guys and their diabolical plan with their half-baked greater good justification, and the climactic confrontation at the end was a little stupid if you ask me.

>>11464678
So far so good but it requires an effort to get going.

>>11464705
The second book does take place on another planet, but it's still the same shitty cyber-dystopia, and I think it's good. Also, there are some important differences in how the adaptation handled the Envoy Core and Quellcrist Falconer.

Odd question but are there any "original English Light Novels"? I was just reminded of the attempts in the 90s and 00s by English manga publishers to market western-authored manga series and was wondering if similar stuff had cropped up.

All the stuff like YA authors (eg the eternally shilled Mass) and the Super Sales and Michael Scott Earle stuff seems to fill a similar pulp format but aren't exactly hitting the same "anime style" that you'd expect from a LN.

(I suppose the No Game No Life author technically counts as "western" since he's Japanese-Brazilian.)

I don't really consider web novels to count since they're largely long-term serializations that end when the author gets bored with it. Now if the author is doing rewrites and republishing it as a book, like what happens with some WNs like I'm a Spider, then maybe yeah that would count.

its the exact reason why its done.
theres a bias in fantasy against female writers because the overwhelming majority is male and often self insert to immerse themselves in the book. which is harder if you know that the protagonists are female or the book is written by a female. thus the initials. they get away with it more often than not too if the main character is male. though the writing gives them away almost instantly.

Despite all the expected weeping, I suspect this is the real reason for the male audience's "oppressive" preference. You just know, even when they disguise their work by avoiding abs and love triangles. Every girl is a man until she hears her triggertopic stumble out on the discussion table.

good old ursula is the only one that comes to mind.
its not really a thing for men to be able to enjoy womens writing. fiction writing would be a much simpler affair if everyone would just recognize that men like to read things by men and women like to read things by women and men.
its just how it is. there isnt anything wrong with it really. the only issue arises from soiboys and angry feminists that cry UNFAIR because of a precieved lack of imbalance in representation. said repesentation isnt even intentional. reading is driven by the consumer. clearly everyone that actively reads is okey with the situation.

Well okay, I see a number of people praise Percy but I think he's a person who got everything handed on a silver platter
>when he was 12 he killed the minotaur which was a beast that terrorized an entire kingdom so much the king had to order the construction of the labyrinth just to contain it
>in a short time Percy beat the children of Ares who were born to use weapons and fight
>he could control water and do tons of shit because he is the son of Poseidon, basically a special snowflake. Noted that none of Poseidon's children in myth actually had hydrokinesis.
>he could beat Ares, even Diomedes had to be guided by Athena to harm him. Later he beat Hades who had to run away and bet on his mercy.
>he beat Luke who was the best swordsman in 300 years (I think) after a short time of training
Right in vol 1 Percy was almost a borderline Gary Stu if the gods didn't treat him like shit. I can barely understand why he is a good character. He pretty much pulled out powers whenever it's convenient and all we got is "Well because he is the son of Poseidon so he gets all the powerset of Poseidon." which doesn't make any sense. Heracles for example is the greatest hero of Greek but he never shot lightning or flew.

Percy was a demigod, and if you read out the series you would see that zeus, Poseidon and Hades' seeds are super potent. They were banned from pregging mortal women because their offspring are usually too powerful.

I read this series when younger and it was a great way to absorb greek mythology. I wanted a Gods amongst us fix and this was perfect.
The series sadly is for young adults, I don't know how much you would enjoy them if you are a jaded adult. I dropped Riordan a few years ago when made a character gay for Percy. The author is just a sjw pandering mess now. I suggest you read the five Percy Jackson books and end it there.

Also it really bothers me that both Jason and Thalia could shoot lightning when Zeus was the biggest guy who feared his children would usurp him like Kronos.
Nico is an okay character until he became ultra retarded. Gay is okay in my book because ancient Greeks were a bunch of degenerates.

After a spaceship crashes into the sky, it turns out that kabbalistic Judaism is literally true.
Angels and demons appear and take part in human politics.
Names of God that let you perform miracles are bruteforced in sweatshops and protected by copyright.
Everything is based on secret recurring patterns - the royal road to wisdom is detecting similarities between rock songs, Biblical history and West Coast geography. For this reason the book has some VERY impressively advanced puns and easter eggs.
Many of the supernatural characters are humorous and parodic, but the Devil is 100% evil in a 100% serious manner. His goal is literally just torturing people in hell in all the most horrible ways.
The author uses the book to discuss the problem of evil from a Singerian consequentialist point of view. At the end he gives an arguably convincing solution.

Some of Iain M. Bank's books certainly qualify. While the "Culture" may appear to be the standardgood guys they are really not. If you have never read the Culture books I would recommend starting the series with "Inversions", because it is written from the perspective of the "other" side. If you dont know about the "Culture" and its goals is is a really unique reading experience that you cant have again if you start with any other book from the series. If you want to start with the beginning read "Consider Phlebas" or "Player of Games".

Some of Bank's sci fi books that do not take place in the "Culture" universe are also pretty grim and bleak at times, like "Against a Dark Background" or "The Algebraist".

Be careful about casualty rates across "the army" or "the military". Cooks on a FOB might have a yearly casualty rate of .1%. Infantrymen might have a yearly casualty rate of 25% or worse in elite or unlucky units. Vietnam was characterized by fewer men in heavier contact than WW2. If you read carefully, you'll notice how huge the military establishment in Forever War is compared to the number of soldiers actually on the ground fighting. The is a correct portrayal of a modern military.

There's fictionpress, which is fanfiction.net's version of itself for original fiction.

Only problem is... With fanfiction.net, you occasionally get good writers who write there, because they can't actually publish their work. With fictionpress, near as I can tell most of the good authors go and try to actually publish their work instead of putting it there.

>Population increases by 1 million people in Africa ... every week.

A interesting statement considering worldwide population growth is 200,000 a day. The annual worldwide population growth is 1%, in 1960 it was 2%.

>Africa is expected to have 2 billion people in 2050

you forget to note that Africa's current population is 1.2 billion

>but that doesn't fit the Internet Research Agency narrative.

reposting from my thread:
Is there a good fantasy book with a female lead? Battle scenes would be cool. But the story just shouldnt feel like written from a teenager girl or written for teenager girls (the last book I read that was like that, was magonia, it was not bad).

So please just a good book you can enjoy while you are in your mid twenties.

Restricted Fantasies. Saw it on FB, collection of hard sci-fi short stories themed around virtual reality and the simulation hypothesis. Kind of a Black Mirror tone.

Star Maker - old Olaf Stapledon sci-fi book that ranges over huge time period and doesn't really follow story structure. Out there but interesting. Lots of weird alien species and social commentary.

Everything else recent was bloated.

There's this one book that blew me out of the water. Straight fantasy, great lore, autistic made up language and names... I went straight to give it a review, but seems like the author took it out of amazon (or amazon removed it themselves). I may be the only person in the world right now who read the guy's book. It's too bad, because it's great. And it seems the sequel was already out too, but when I finished the first book it was too late, I doubt a single person on the planet downloaded it. I wonder what happened. I would email the guy, but he is literally who with a fake name and no author page on any website.

Is there a way of ripping off a book from kindle's app?

What does it matter? It doesn't exist outside my phone anyways. Maybe if one day it goes back into amazon I'll come back and shill it here. I'm afraid the author's given up and it will be lost forever, which would be very strange, since I can tell he must've worked hard on it: it's two whole books! It must be like 900 pages of completely autistic fantasy writing!(but I can't really tell since I read it on my phone). And they guy made about 6 bucks from it, 2 from me and 4 from the other 2 guys who downloaded it from kindle unlimited. It's sad.

Anyway, it's a book about elves, and I could spoil here, but it has to do with the history of the species and the world. It's a journey book, an elf in a quest against the evil dude while having to take shit from a thot.

And the Norse ones making sure to devote a ton of material to a gender fluid character and never letting you forget that the character is totally gender fluid? I am still working on my writeup. In general, the bad phonetic Greek the guys say to Grafton is basically Sorry - rise again! - the lights they carry on the train are like psychopomp lights, and reappear at the end with the treasure. There are two legends that are easy to gloss over - one involves the hand and spirits - using it will bind someone to serve those spirits, while the story of Peterke's grandfather and the little spirit that no one else could see REALLY resonates with the dictator no one but Grafton can see at times. The story is all about possession.

possession of the country, of a wife, by spirits, through magic, etc. I am still sorting it out but I highly doubt that the bishop was the undead dragon - when Grafton goes to Vlad's house Martya notes that he has been acting like an ass all day - possession again. The reason everyone's faces are so similar might involve the dolls - are spirits being given new bodies throughout? Grafton seems to be related to the chewed up graphite pencil he finds in the house (Grafote! says one of the guys, meaning sign this). the girl with the red pen is his editor (editors are hell, he says) who might have some influence over what he knows, as his notes dictate his personality and he seems to fall asleep everytime someone leaves the room. The interviewers say he talks like a child. something is up with him - he has a vision that he will die in the country, but he leaves at the end.

apparently its some sort of trolling tactic. happened to several romance authors earlier this year. people would hire clickfarm which only cost a buck or so for several thousands of clicks and sic them onto whomever they dont like. the takedown from amazons side is completely automated investigation only happens after the author petitions for it. which apparently michael scott-earle is currently doing. on the upside pretty much all of the romance authors that have been hit by this have had their accounts and books restored previously. it does take some time though. the investigation seems to take 2-3 weeks. which can really eat into the bottom-line of an indie author. probably not an issue for MSE but j.a. cipriano is not gonna have a nice time.
