/lit/ what are some iconic book covers?
Covers that in their own way are as instantly familiar as the stories they represent.
I can only think of two immediately off the top of my head...

Did that design originate with the book? I always assumed it was a product of the Spielberg film. If so then that's a great choice.

This one might just be personally iconic. My favorite version, with the Gorey illustrations.

Oh, well damn. It's pretty well known, I believe. It's the version I own and the version I first read, and it's on some book t-shirt site, at least.

The cover is from the original book, but Crichton wrote it as a Spielberg (well, Spielbergian anyway) movie, so it's six of one.

You'd think there'd be more obvious choices that spring to mind. There really isn't enough effort made for cover designs anymore.

Disagree. That featureless oddly brown/red cover is far more iconic. The original may hold a place in your heart or something, but as far as flat out iconic, the edge goes to the later paperback cover, which at Salinger's insistance included nothing but the title and the author. No synopsis, no blurb, nothing but a single solid color and author and title.

Iconic in the sense that it's simple perhaps but as far as familiarity goes I still think the original artwork would be more well-known than featureless red.

Every early Discworld novel to me, and I'm sure many people. is iconic, not so much for an individual entry in the series, but for the series as a whole.
