I read some Dasa Drndic recently and it was pretty good. Sort of like a Croatian WG Sebald but a little more experimental and less sentimental.

I've also heard great things about Dubravka Ugresic but haven't read her myself.

I did, and it was dumb. My point was that books (even books with nationalist ideas) have no nationalism. Books are not nationalistic themselves, but the term "x literature" exists because it is useful to describe books of a certain character, and it is a bad term.

It's not a bad term because of some idea that books aren't their context, that's not the point. It's also not the point that literature is some vessel of universally human themes. Books themselves are just not nationalistic, and also that's not because they aren't humans with minds, but because calling something for example, "American literature" gives way to many poor assumptions, as useful as it may be. There is no Croatian literature. There is a novel written by a Croatian, and the abstract of "Croatian novel" leads to unnecessary considerations.
