Is this a good version of the Bible to read as literature?

Depends if you want it to be archaic or not. KJV and NKJV are good if you just want to read it and don't particularly care about having the most accurate translation possible.

What if I'm not sure about what denomination of Christianity I should trust?

I'm interested in learning more about Christianity and potentially devoting myself to an individual denomination. My thinking is that if I read a Catholic Bible, then I'll be swayed to be Catholic, or if I read KJV I'll prefer Protestantism, and so on. That's why I'm interested in literary translation: if the translator isn't aiming to preserve religious fidelity, I'll have a clearer, more agnostic perspective when I'm compare how different denominations do things.

I've also decided to read the bible recently. I have a King James version as well as a Jerusalem bible. No idea which to better. Biblehub.com is a really good resource for reading though - it lets you compare versions and translations, and has commentary. I've also been recommended The Kingdom Within: The Inner Meaning of Jesus' Sayings by John A Sanford, which (I'm told) is a Jungian reading of everything notable saying. Hope this helps, OP

It has the correct translation, but the Oxford is not necessarily the best edition. You can get high quality KJVs at good prices from the Trinitarian Society and Local Church Bible Publishers.

Also, that Oxford edition has sparse notes so it's not the best if you are looking for a study bible.

I would overall recommend you avoid study bibles and annotated editions. most of the notes distract from reading and don't go that deep anyway. The New Oxford Annotated Bible has interesting scholarly (though critical) notes but the translation is barely accurate, it is very gender neutral.

The KJV is the best version for appreciating the literary qualities of the Bible, and it is better in terms of accuracy than most modern translations as well.

If you want to better understand the theological significance of specific verses, look them up in a commentary to read alongside. I would recommend Calvin's, his one is still more refreshing and interesting to read than modern ones.

I say that as a member of a Catholic community. It's great for forming friendships and keeping up tradition, having a sense of belonging maybe, but it's just mythology. Same as any other religion we call paganism, adjusted to fit modern values.
