the goldfinch is a beautiful painting. not many of fabritius' paintings survived, most of them (along with fabritius himself) were destroyed in an explosion.
it's in the mauritshuis. i nearly cried when i saw it. it's in the next room to the girl with the pearl earring.

There is this trend in fantasy lit that began after the Peter Jackson LOTR movies, but really took off with HBO producing GOT, where authors write in hope of an adaptation and you can just sense it in the way things are paced and described that you are reading a crypto-screenplay that only has plausible deniability due to formatting differences.

Anyway, The Goldfinch is emblematic of this approach crossing over from genre in to lit. The book is like slogging through a Netflix original series; it is high concept but can't fully execute it's ideas and is about a a third too long resulting in you finishing it out of a sense of obligation, "well I made it this far, may as well get to the end".

The Secret History is better (and not nearly as much of a slog to finish) but less ambitious than Goldfinch.

it's sloggy enough. convince me that it isn't just an edgier harry potter with a bunch of kids who started with the greeks instead of magic

Interesting. I hadn't put it together but it did feel as if it were a movie, probably a 2 part movie. Can I ask what you mean by "high concept"? Do you mean it had higher intentions for it's depth but couldn't deliver?

This description makes me want to read this for some reason.

"High concept" is screenplay term that I sort of abused in the context of my post since I was equating her work to film or premium tv. It more or less refers to a work that can be pitched in a short snappy sentence or two without losing whole lot of nuance. Game of Thrones was pitched in the media as "LOTR meets The Sopranos" and everyone understood what they were getting in to near instantaneously with that, Die Hard is another example of high concept "man stuck in a building that has been taken over by terrorists and has to get out". I used the term because of the screenplay-ish manner that it was written.

>Do you mean it had higher intentions for it's depth but couldn't deliver?
As for this, I did not intend it this way but I would say this is a fair assessment of the book regardless. There a tension in the book between wanting to create a broad cinematic-style appeal and also the desire say something immensely profound but ultimately coming up short.

I enjoyed The Goldfinch. I enjoyed it less than Donna Tartt's other two books.

Am I the only one who really likes The Little Friend?

I like The Secret History better, although part of the reason is that I went to a liberal arts college and Donna Tartt captures the feeling of a liberal arts college very well.
