I've never posted on /lit/ before! Or lurked! What fun.

So, over the summer I started reading Discworld. So far, I've read The Colour of Magic, The Light Fantastic, Equal Rites, Mort, Reaper Man, and I'm halfway through Soul Music. (I like the Death series.) The books are fun to read so far.

What do you guys think about Discworld?

>> No.1142113

Enjoyable books, and Terry Pratchett is a nice guy.

>> No.1142129

Discworld is my favourate fantasy world. Pratchett's humour is amazing.

I usually do the bulk of my reading during my breaks at work--a good hour lunch and a shorter break or two. It's just a convenient time to read. Usually I leave it at that, since I have my schoolwork to do, and of course a couple of other hobbies to pursue. But the past four books I've read have been Discworld novels, and every one of them, I have started at work, and that night taken them home and been up half the night finishing them.

I just can't help myself. I have to keep going.

In this way, Pratchett is something of a badass.

>> No.1142132

They're great. A bit trashy - easy, enjoyable, funny books. I generally read "literature" - but its nice to read something different and entertaining every now and again (I'm not saying I don't enjoy "literature", I fucking love a lot of it, but discworld is just simple relaxing fun).

>> No.1142142

I love 'em, but they're hit-and-miss. Some books are remarkably better than others.

Hogfather is always fun to read around Christmas time.

This, so much. The man has such a fucking amazing grasp of satire. And he makes incredibly human characters, and has a massive knowledge of folklore and mythology. I'm really sad whenever I think about what he's going through.

>> No.1142163

I love the Watch series. Samuel Vimes is such a badass.

The others I can take or leave.

Same here !

>> No.1142286

OP here. Like I said, I'm reading the Death series, because I find the character Death to be really fucking fascinating. After that I'm going to read Pyramids and Small Gods. Then, who knows?

I'm thinking the City Watch series. According to a dude I met who was reading Night Watch, it was his favorite book. Although, I might read some of the Rincewind series in there, and maybe the Moist von Lipwig series as well. (only two so far; can't be that difficult.)

Fuck the witches. I'll read those last.

discworld is god tier

Read the whole series in order, thats what i'm doing.

>> No.1142293

I love the witches, honestly. But what I like about Pratchett is just how many references he can cram on to one page. The more you know the funnier it is.

Read the books that interest you. That's what I'm doing.

See, I can do it too

So the witches are interesting, eh? Eh, Maybe I will read them in relative order, then. I'll finish Death first, though. Fucking interesting.

I'm reading Mort right now

OP here. Fuck yeah, dude. Mort kicks ass. It will probably remain as my favorite book, even after I've read them all.

OP, I would have to recommend you read the Watch series first, and then the books about Moist Von Lipwig, so as not to spoil part of the fun of the Watch books. Of course that would also mean nleaving The Truth and Monstrous Regiment for later.
Nightwatch is also my favorite Discworld book.

Watch then Lipwig. Got it.

Also, I plan to read the standalone books in order. And I don't know; all the books are probably worth reading. Maybe after I finish the Death series I'll just read them all in order. I'll see, I guess. But if I'm going to be reading them all, might as well go in rough order? Hm.

Here's the general guide to reading order.
Also, another vote for Night Watch as best discworld book ever.

Tell you what, whatever you do, read Thief of Time as soon as possible, that way, when you're reading the other books, specially Small Gods, you won't go cross eyed trying to figure out the time line.

Holy hell, fucking useful.

Hm, people have a LOT of good stuff to say about Night Watch. I'm willing to bet that when it's all said and done, it will be my 2nd favorite, after Mort, of course.

Death as a character is just so interesting. A personification of death, trying to understand humanity, and he has his own peculiar non-human ways of looking at things. Plus, it's fun to know how the celestial bureaucracy works out. In Soul Music where it goes into more detail about the lifetimers and how it all works and whatnot, I was like, fuck yeah. I love it for some odd reason.

If you liked Mort, you're going to LOVE Reaper Man.

I've read it. I didn't like it was much as Mort, but it was still good. I didn't really care for the the wizards' plot, though. I was like, "c'mon, get back to Death." I'm reading the Death series. I'm almost done with Soul Music now.

We've got quite a DISCussion going on here, eh? hahahaha.

I've lately been realising how clever they actually are, just in terms of their worldview and the views they put across. A young person of my generation or the next couldn't ask for a better moral education (silly as that sounds).

Susan: "You're saying humans need ... fantasies to make life bearable."
Death: REALLY? AS IF IT WAS SOME KIND OF PINK PILL? NO. HUMANS NEED FANTASIES TO BE HUMAN. TO BE THE PLACE WHERE THE FALLING ANGEL MEETS THE RISING APE.
Susan: "Tooth fairies? Hogfathers? Little--"
Death: YES. AS PRACTICE. YOU HAVE TO START OUT LEARNING TO BELIEVE THE LITTLE LIES.
Susan: "So we can believe the big ones?"
Death: YES. JUSTICE. MERCY. DUTY. THAT SORT OF THING.
